Behind the Scenes at Rooibaard Woodwork: How Custom Furniture Is Made

Every piece of custom furniture has a story long before it reaches a client's home.

At Rooibaard Woodwork, that story usually starts with an idea. Sometimes a client arrives with detailed drawings. Sometimes they have a few reference images. Other times they simply know what they want the finished piece to feel like.

Our job is to take that idea and turn it into something real.

From the first conversation and timber selection to machining, joinery, finishing and installation, every project goes through our workshop in Cape Town. Here is a look behind the scenes at how we turn an idea into a handcrafted piece of furniture.

It Starts With a Conversation

Many of our projects begin through recommendations from previous clients. Someone sees a table, cabinet or another piece we've made and asks who built it.

Other clients contact us directly or visit our Cape Town workshop.

Before we start designing anything, we want to understand the person we're building it for.

What inspired the idea? Where will the piece be used? What does the client want it to look and feel like?

What timber do they like? How will it work within the rest of their home?

We encourage clients to share everything, even ideas that might seem difficult or unusual.

Custom woodworking gives us the freedom to explore ideas that aren't available in normal furniture stores. Something that initially sounds complicated can often be designed and built with the right approach.

Our goal is to understand what the client genuinely wants before we start making it.

Turning an Idea Into a Design

Once we understand the client's vision, we start developing the design.

This is a collaborative process.

We discuss proportions, dimensions, timber choices, finishes, joinery and smaller details that will influence the final piece.

But we don't expect clients to make every decision from drawings or pictures alone.

Whenever necessary, we create physical samples in our workshop.

Being able to physically see and touch these samples makes choosing the final details much easier.

Once the design is approved, we prepare the final quotation and the project can move into production.

We Personally Select the Timber

One part of our process that happens away from the workshop is timber selection.

We don't simply order random timber and wait for it to arrive.

We visit our suppliers and personally select the boards we want to use.

Every board is considered based on its grain, colour, quality and how it will work with the other boards in the project.

This is especially important when building large pieces such as solid wood tables where several boards need to work together visually.

Selecting timber ourselves also helps us plan cuts carefully and reduce unnecessary offcuts and waste.

The result is better control over both the appearance and quality of the finished furniture.

Even Our Veneer Is Carefully Selected

The same attention goes into projects that use wood veneer.

Rather than simply buying whatever pre-veneered board happens to be available, we can select individual veneer sheets and have them pressed onto boards specifically for a project.

This gives us greater control over the grain and colour.

Veneer can be an exceptional material when it is selected and used correctly. The important part is making sure it complements the solid timber and the overall design instead of looking like an afterthought.

Everything Starts From Raw Timber

Once the timber arrives at the workshop, the actual build begins.

The wood starts in its raw form before being machined and prepared for the project.

From there, each component gradually takes shape.

Depending on the project, this can involve cutting, machining, shaping, joining, sanding and finishing before everything finally comes together.

There isn't a standard production line where every piece looks exactly the same.

Each project is different because each client, space and piece of timber is different.

That's one of the things we enjoy most about custom furniture making.

Problems Are Part of Custom Woodworking

No matter how carefully a project is planned, custom furniture can present unexpected decisions during the build.

A particular grain might change how we want to position a board. A detail may work differently once it is seen at full scale. An installation might require an adjustment that couldn't have been predicted from drawings.

When these decisions affect the final appearance or function of the piece, we don't simply make the choice for the client.

We involve them.

Sometimes that means sending an update. Other times we invite the client into the workshop so they can see the piece and discuss the options with us.

We want the client to remain part of the process because ultimately we aren't building the furniture for ourselves. We're building it for them.

Why We Visit the Client's Space

For fitted furniture and pieces designed for a specific area, we prefer to visit the site ourselves.

Measurements are important, but they don't tell the whole story.

Being in the space allows us to understand the available space, installation requirements, natural light, humidity and moisture, existing materials, surrounding furniture, wall and floor conditions and how the piece will actually be used.

These details can influence everything from the timber and finish to the construction and installation method.

A piece of furniture shouldn't only look good on its own. It needs to work properly in the space it was designed for.

A Normal Day in the Rooibaard Workshop

Our workshop days start early.

Work begins at around 7:00 in the morning and continues until 4:00 in the afternoon.

But workshop life isn't only about machines, sawdust and timber.

Tea breaks and lunch give us time to sit together, talk, joke around and discuss what we're working on.

New designs get discussed. Problems get solved. Upcoming projects get planned.

Some of the best ideas can start during a simple conversation around the workshop.

It's part of what makes Rooibaard feel less like a production line and more like a place where people genuinely enjoy making things.

From the Workshop to the Client

Eventually, raw boards become a finished piece of furniture.

The final stages involve checking the details, applying the appropriate finish and making sure the piece is ready for its new home.

Where installation is required, we're involved in making sure the furniture fits and works as intended.

Seeing the finished piece in the space it was designed for is one of the most rewarding parts of the entire process.

What started as a conversation, sketch or reference image has become something physical that could remain in that home for decades.

Custom woodworking isn't simply about cutting timber and putting pieces together.

It's about understanding an idea and finding the best way to build it.

It means selecting the right materials, understanding how timber behaves, solving problems during construction and paying attention to details that most people will never notice.
